DESCRIPTION:Bird Walk at Thol Bird Sanctuary\, Gujarat \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Mehsana\n \n \n \n \n 16 November\, 2025\n \n \n \n \n Bhargav Limbachiya\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n About Thol Bird Sanctuary \n \n \n \n Thol Bird Sanctuary\, located in Gujarat near Ahmedabad\, is a stunning freshwater wetland famous for its expansive lake\, open grasslands\, and acacia woodlands. Originally built as an irrigation reservoir\, it has evolved into a natural haven for migratory and resident birds\, especially during the winter months when thousands of waterfowl gather along its shallow shores. The sanctuary’s wide open waters\, surrounded by reeds and agricultural fields\, create a serene landscape where bird calls echo above the gentle ripples of the lake. The peaceful walking trails and watch points offer visitors opportunities to enjoy the quiet beauty of nature\, making it a favourite destination for birdwatchers\, photographers\, and nature lovers. \n \n \n \n The sanctuary is particularly well known for hosting large flocks of flamingos\, pelicans\, storks\, and various species of ducks and waders that thrive in its nutrient-rich waters. Raptors\, herons\, ibises\, and egrets add to the diversity\, while grassland birds and small passerines can be spotted in nearby scrub and farmland. The changing seasons bring a shift in species diversity\, with winter turning Thol into a vibrant avian festival as migratory birds arrive from distant regions. Its blend of wetland habitat\, peaceful atmosphere\, and ecological importance makes Thol Bird Sanctuary a vital refuge for wildlife and a cherished natural treasure for visitors seeking to connect with Gujarat’s rich biodiversity. \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Partnered with \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Bird Guide: Limbachiya bhargav pankajbhaiNature enthusiast and avid birder. The shallow lake attracts impressive gatherings of large waterbirds\, including Painted Storks\, Asian Openbill Storks\, Pelicans\, Herons\, and Egrets\, which can often be seen feeding or roosting in groups. Along the reed beds and marshy stretches\, Swamphens\, White-breasted Waterhens\, and Eurasian Coots move through the water and vegetation\, while various Sandpipers forage along the shoreline. Kingfishers and Bee-eaters flash bright colours as they hunt insects and fish\, and flocks of Parakeets and doves like Laughing Doves and Spotted Doves are commonly heard chattering among the trees. Peafowl strolling through the bushes and seasonal warblers flitting across the scrub add to the sanctuary’s lively charm.\n\nThol is equally exciting for raptor enthusiasts\, offering sightings of both resident and migratory birds of prey. Species such as Shikra\, Black Kite\, and Black-shouldered Kite are frequently spotted\, while winter brings impressive visitors like the Steppe Eagle\, Booted Eagle\, and the elegant Oriental Honey Buzzard. Reports of sparrowhawks add to the thrill of scanning the skies. At the same time\, small insect-catchers like Flycatchers bring activity to thickets and wooded patches\, showcasing the sanctuary’s varied microhabitats. With its mix of wetland specialists\, soaring raptors\, colourful woodland birds\, and seasonal migrants\, Thol Bird Sanctuary stands as one of Gujarat’s richest avian habitats and a truly rewarding destination for nature observers year-round. \n \n \n \n \n Painted Stork \n \n \n \n Openbill Stork \n \n \n \n Spot-billed Pelican \n \n \n \n Grey-headed Swamphen \n \n \n \n Red-wattled Lapwing \n \n \n \n Grey Heron \n \n \n \n White-throated Kingfisher \n \n \n \n Little Egret \n \n \n \n Purple Heron \n \n \n \n Rose-ringed Parakeet \n \n \n \n Eurasian Coot \n \n \n \n Shikra \n \n \n \n Oriental Honey Buzzard \n \n \n \n Indian Robin \n \n \n \n Oriental Magpie Robin \n \n \n \n Asian Green Bee-eater \n \n \n \n Indian Roller \n \n \n \n Indian Pond Heron \n \n \n \n Bronze-winged Jacana \n \n \n \n Asian Koel \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Summary of Walk \n \n \n \n At Thol Bird Sanctuary\, 21 bird enthusiasts gathered to explore the wetlands and recorded 62 species\, all of which were documented on the Ataavi app. Participants enjoyed observing large flocks of Pelicans\, Spoonbills\, Cormorants\, Egrets\, Darters\, and Comb Ducks\, making the walk exceptionally memorable. \n \n \n \n The guide demonstrated how to create checklists\, record observations\, and contribute meaningfully to citizen science. Kingfishers and Bee-eaters flash bright colours as they hunt insects and fish\, and flocks of Parakeets and doves like Laughing Doves and Spotted Doves are commonly heard chattering among the trees. Peafowl strolling through the bushes and seasonal warblers flitting across the scrub add to the sanctuary’s lively charm.\n\nThol is equally exciting for raptor enthusiasts\, offering sightings of both resident and migratory birds of prey. Species such as Shikra\, Black Kite\, and Black-shouldered Kite are frequently spotted\, while winter brings impressive visitors like the Steppe Eagle\, Booted Eagle\, and the elegant Oriental Honey Buzzard. Reports of sparrowhawks add to the thrill of scanning the skies. At the same time\, small insect-catchers like Flycatchers bring activity to thickets and wooded patches\, showcasing the sanctuary’s varied microhabitats. With its mix of wetland specialists\, soaring raptors\, colourful woodland birds\, and seasonal migrants\, Thol Bird Sanctuary stands as one of Gujarat’s richest avian habitats and a truly rewarding destination for nature observers year-round. \n \n \n \n \n Painted Stork \n \n \n \n Openbill Stork \n \n \n \n Spot-billed Pelican \n \n \n \n Grey-headed Swamphen \n \n \n \n Red-wattled Lapwing \n \n \n \n Grey Heron \n \n \n \n White-throated Kingfisher \n \n \n \n Little Egret \n \n \n \n Purple Heron \n \n \n \n Rose-ringed Parakeet \n \n \n \n Eurasian Coot \n \n \n \n Shikra \n \n \n \n Oriental Honey Buzzard \n \n \n \n Indian Robin \n \n \n \n Oriental Magpie Robin \n \n \n \n Asian Green Bee-eater \n \n \n \n Indian Roller \n \n \n \n Indian Pond Heron \n \n \n \n Bronze-winged Jacana \n \n \n \n Asian Koel \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Summary of Walk \n \n \n \n At Thol Bird Sanctuary\, 21 bird enthusiasts gathered to explore the wetlands and recorded 62 species\, all of which were documented on the Ataavi app. Participants enjoyed observing large flocks of Pelicans\, Spoonbills\, Cormorants\, Egrets\, Darters\, and Comb Ducks\, making the walk exceptionally memorable. \n \n \n \n The guide demonstrated how to create checklists\, record observations\, and contribute meaningfully to citizen science.
