Highlights from the Event

A campus bird walk at Tripura University, led by Sueal Ankirit Rana, highlighted the rich avian diversity supported by the university’s green spaces and water bodies. Overhead, Asian Palm Swifts and Black Kites were active, while a Shikra added excitement with its presence. Wetland edges hosted Pond Heron, Intermediate Egret, and Lesser Whistling-Ducks, while the vibrant White-throated Kingfisher stood out along the water.

The tree cover and open areas were alive with activity, featuring Spangled and Black Drongos, Ashy Woodswallows, and vocal species like Lineated Barbet and Black-hooded Oriole. Parakeets—including Rose-ringed and Red-breasted—moved in flocks, while Purple Sunbirds and woodpeckers added color and movement. Common species such as mynas, crows, House Sparrows, and doves rounded off the checklist, with Chestnut-tailed Starling and Asian Pied Starling adding variety. The walk offered participants a well-rounded introduction to campus birding while emphasizing observation skills and habitat awareness.

Bird Guide: Sueal Ankrit Rana

Sueal Ankirit Rana is a Guest Lecturer in Zoology at Maharaja Bir Bikram College, with over three years of teaching experience. With five years of fieldwork across Tripura, he has actively studied regional biodiversity in collaboration with the Tripura Biodiversity Board and Forest Department. He is currently involved in faunal documentation with the Wild Tripura Foundation, contributing to the Biodiversity Register of Tripura. His work also spans wildlife workshops, photography, and participation in elephant telemetry projects with Asian Nature Conservation Foundation.
