Highlights from the Event

A campus bird walk at Maharaja Bir Bikram College, led by Sueal Ankirit Rana, offered participants an engaging introduction to everyday birdlife within an urban green space. The walk highlighted how even campus habitats can support diverse species, with birds like Black Kite and Asian House Swift overhead, while Little Cormorant made use of nearby water bodies. Common residents such as Red-vented Bulbul, Spotted Dove, House Sparrow, and Jungle Myna were easily observed, providing accessible learning moments for participants.

The tree cover and understory revealed a richer layer of activity, with calls of Asian Koel and sightings of Lineated Barbet and Greater Flameback adding to the experience. Insectivores like Black Drongo, Hair-crested Drongo, Green Bee-eater, and White-throated Fantail were active, while skulking species such as Puff-throated Babbler and Common Tailorbird tested observation skills. A highlight mix of color and movement came from birds like Orange-headed Thrush, Black-headed Oriole, and Chestnut-tailed Starling, making the walk both diverse and rewarding while emphasizing the ecological value of campus green spaces.

Bird Guide: Sueal Ankrit Rana

Sueal Ankirit Rana is a Guest Lecturer in Zoology at Maharaja Bir Bikram College, with over three years of teaching experience. With five years of fieldwork across Tripura, he has actively studied regional biodiversity in collaboration with the Tripura Biodiversity Board and Forest Department. He is currently involved in faunal documentation with the Wild Tripura Foundation, contributing to the Biodiversity Register of Tripura. His work also spans wildlife workshops, photography, and participation in elephant telemetry projects with Asian Nature Conservation Foundation.
