Bird Walk at Saul Kere, Bengaluru

Twenty-three participants joined the bird walk at Saul Kere, one of Bengaluru’s important urban wetlands, where even with lower-than-usual water levels the lake continued to support an impressive diversity of birdlife. Participants explored the wetland and surrounding vegetation while recording an outstanding 47 bird species, demonstrating the ecological importance of the habitat despite seasonal conditions. Waterbirds, woodland birds, and garden species together created a lively checklist, giving participants excellent opportunities to observe different feeding behaviours and bird calls throughout the morning.

Among the highlights was the sighting of the Small Minivet, an uncommon species for this location that generated considerable excitement among regular birders. Close encounters with the striking Black-rumped Flameback, colourful Kingfishers, the elusive Greater Coucal, and flocks of Scaly-breasted Munias further enriched the experience. The combination of uncommon sightings, approachable birds, and productive habitat kept participants engaged throughout the walk, reinforcing Saul Kere’s value as an urban biodiversity hotspot and making the outing both educational and memorable.
